Key ideas from the book

The author says, we wake up every morning and do what society expects us to do. We have hope and endeavour to be successful in our work and personal life. Life is a marathon, though we get caught up in short-term goals and tasks in the daily grind. So, we need to think deeper and evaluate the fundamentals of all our efforts.

The book has ten nuggets/chapters, ideas from some chapters are given below.

Finding one’s purpose is difficult if you are tied up in being busy.

If you don't spare a moment to reflect on your true calling, how will you find your true calling or passion? Here, the author discusses ways or thought processes by which you can find these answers. The “Reflect and Act” segment after every chapter/nugget has actionable ideas you can reflect over.

Rethink ideas of success, commonly associated with money and fame.

Other than money and fame, many people consider taking care of their family needs means success. For others, success means adding value to other people's lives. Giving many real-life examples and genuine thoughts, the author discusses how you can get clarity on your idea of success. The author’s views help a great deal, for you to reflect on what you must look for in success.

Being true to oneself and authentic is powerful.

Samir Deokuliar advises you not to be someone you are not. It is not easy to be authentic and acknowledge the truth. Sometimes it can be challenging and make you feel vulnerable and disarmed.

Listen and understand rather than just hear.

When you are around people who speak the same language, wear the same kind of clothes and live the same kind of life; you may feel you understand them. But do you? The author talks of better ways you can listen and understand others.

Nuggets of wisdom and clarity

Apart from these, there are more nuggets of wisdom in the book, that are brilliant, impactful and give clarity. As you complete each chapter, the ideas become more deeper and you will feel a change in your thought process. Because the book has an honest narrative that comes from experience and personal reflection, it is convincing and touches your heart.

Conclusion

If you want authentic ideas that are insightful, and practical, then "Getting There" is a great reading choice. You can reflect on the learnings from the book because it provides you with a dotted line you can walk on to find your purpose and get clarity on what success means to you.

Book review of Be Obsessed or Be Average

Anybody who wants to succeed must read this life-changing productivity book "Be Obsessed or Be Average," by Grant Cardone. His engaging language, stories and examples will make you concentrate on your goals if you wish for extraordinary success.

About Author Grant Cardone

Grant Cardone is a reputed entrepreneur, motivational speaker and author. His writing style is straightforward, engaging and supported by several examples and anecdotes. He is the CEO of Cardone Capital with more than 4 billion dollars in assets.

As an author, he has eight business books to his credit and is part of thirteen business programs. Apart from this, he is the CEO or partner of seven other companies and listed as a top business influencer (social media) by Forbes.

As a consultant, he travels the world for consultation with Fortune 500 companies, governments and industries. His LinkedIn profile says that success is your duty, obligation and responsibility.

Let's find what “Be Obsessed or Be Average” is about.

This dynamic manual asks if mediocrity has value, doing the predictable and routine will fetch great results. He says, being mediocre is acceptable in society and few are obsessed with their extraordinary big goals.

Personal examples of the author

Cardone recalls moments when he had his multimillionaire goals. His life illustrates the value of compulsive thinking that unleashes the potential to break free from mediocre life. This obsession to get extraordinary success is what pushed Grant Cardone to transform from a struggling entrepreneur to a successful multimillion-dollar businessman.

Cardone thinks obsession can make you great if you set goals and have tenacity. Personal stories reveal how obsession helped Cardone flourish.

Being average and safe or having huge ambitions and refusing to settle

Average and safe don't work anymore. Obsessively pursue your huge ambitions and refuse to settle. Only then can you join the industry builders, game changers, innovators, and top performers in your sector?

Success requires dedication which trumps strategy, time, and competition. Obsession is the only way you can change the world.

10X Rule to maximize results

Cardone compares obsession to attention, perseverance, and other qualities. He encourages his audience to aim high and provides instances of his "10X Rule," which instructs people to work ten times harder to achieve their goals.

Follow your interests for “Work-life balance”

Cardone disagrees that work-life balance is important. He encourages having a balanced professional-personal integration for a well-rounded life. He believes that following interests is the only route to happiness and that settling for less than our full potential is the surest way to never achieve it.

Some important ideas from the book

Overcoming worry and rejection is helpful because past failures should act as motivation. Cardone advises readers to see failures as a learning experience and to continue working on their goals. Throughout the book, Cardone explores various aspects of obsession, including,

  • Audacious goal-setting,
  • Dream big
  • Take massive action
  • Not settle for mediocrity
  • Mindset that allows one to fully immerse in passion
  • Overcome fear and rejection
  • Take full responsibility for your life
  • Work ethics
  • Persistence

This book emphasizes self-determination, writing our narrative, stop blaming others and taking charge of our life.

I think, "Be Obsessed or Be Average" gives good advice, but some readers may find the author's incessant striving too much. Not everyone might like Cardone's straightforward approach. Most people prefer a work-life balance by attending to other areas of their life too. However, if you wish to have 10x success then this book will inspire you.

Conclusion

Finally, reading this book will motivate you to reconsider your life and use obsession to succeed. Cardone’s message is compelling and hits you to create an impact in your mindset. "Be Obsessed or Be Average" is thought-provoking, influential and will motivate you to change your mindset and become obsessed with success.

Each chapter displays Grant Cardone's passion and conviction. If you're willing to work hard and avoid settling, this book will help you reach your goals, especially if you are seeking extraordinary success in your life.

Dopamine Detox Book Review

Post by

In this article, you will read a brief review of the book Dopamine Detox by Thibaut Meurisse. In the times you live in, there are multiple distractions that keep you from being more productive.

You must know how these distractions work on your mind, what are the ways to get over them and why Dopamine detox is relevant to you.

What is dopamine?

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter produced in the brain and has multiple functions in the body. It is an essential “feel-good hormone”  but over stimulation of dopamine is not good either.

While dopamine and serotonin are both neuro-transmitter chemicals, they are different in a way. Thibaut says that dopamine is that neurotransmitter which makes you excited and act, do something in anticipation of pleasurable activities or rewards.

Dopamine makes you crave for sugary cakes, click on the social media notification, or look forward to any other activities that give you a pleasant feeling.

Serotonin has more long lasting effect as it makes you feel happy or gives a feeling of well-being after the reward.

What’s in the book “Dopamine Detox”?

The book presents several theories of what happens when you have over stimulation of dopamine. So, you will read about what is dopamine and what role it plays in your life.

After this the author explains what is the problem caused by dopamine rush and why you should practice a detox. He explains a three step method for having a successful dopamine detox routine.

Procrastination is common when there is an excess of dopamine and the mind seeks immediate validation. Setting priorities, thinking of long term goals and taking decisions that are aligned to these goals, seem difficult.

In between the 72 pages of this book, the author talks about ways you can workcome procrastination and actually do the work. He explains the psychology behind instant gratification and how users are manipulated. Lastly, he explains how to not have a dopamine relapse and live a fruitful life.

This book is a very useful read for most people in today's technology driven times. Especially when there is a false sense of busyness yet little time left for real work.

  • Title: Dopamine Detox
  • Author: Thibaut Meurisse
  • Publisher: Thibaut Meurisse
  • Pages: 72
  • Year of Publication: 2021
  • Genre: Productivity, Self-Help
  • Stars: 4.5 out of 5

What happens when you have a dopamine addiction?

Some of the results from excess dopamine that the author talks about are …

  • Whenever there is a social media notification on your smartphone, you can’t resist clicking and spend long time going over other content as well.
  • You seek instant gratification of social media likes and comments or any other instant highs.
  • Causes lack of patience and unable to think of long term goals.
  • Binge on sweets, cold drink beverages, movies, chatting on social media or doing too much exercise.
  • Seek instant replies to messages.
  • Expect fast results.
  • Cognitive biases
  • Adopt incorrect mindsets.
  • Fear of missing out.
  • Restlessness and anxiety.
  • Unable to concentrate and feel distracted.

Whats good about the book, “Dopamine Detox”?

Examples are given wherever the author thinks necessary. Some of the examples were shocking and enlightening.

One such example is that Steve Jobs, the former Apple CEO kept his children away from using phones and tablets, as much as possible, even though he sold them for a living.

Another example that impressed me was that Amazon, the e-commerce giant, was created in 1994 but had it's first profitable year only in 2003 after witnessing a 149 million dollars loss in the previous year.

Additionally, I think the perspectives and theories penned by the author are wise. For instance, he says that for success, one needs to think long term and keep patience. He supports these insights with examples.

What's more important is the book gives actionable steps and tricks that are practical and work on your mindset.

After reading this book review of "Dopamine Detox", you know what is the book is about, there is a right amount of dopamine stimulation and there are ways of training your mind to avoid excess.

From the very beginning, the author grabs your attention with her descriptive narrative of the three sisters, their doctor father Nabhakumar Ganguly, a mother who stitches Kantha embroidered quilts, Zamindar Somnath Chowdhury and his son Amit.

The story is compelling as it begins in August of 1946 in the Mansion of Somnath Chowdhury, a Zamindar. Somanath owns several fields in Ranipur, a shipping business and a well-kept mansion in Kolkata. Yet he delights in staying at his village mansion which happens to be his favourite.

Doctor Nabhakumar Ganguly is a friend of Somnath Chowdhury. Nabhakumar contributes meagre earnings to his family, as he refuses to charge fees from poor patients. His wife embroiders special wedding quilts with exquisite Kantha work and earns some extra money.
